Abdu, Alkader A Y. (2002). Analytical and Evaluate Study of the Secondary School Biology Textbooks in Yemen to Study to What Extent Learning Objectives are Achieved. Unpublished. Ph.D., Education. University of Poona.
The objectives of the study were: (1) To evaluate 11th standard Biology textbook for secondary school in Yemen from teachers’ perspective. (2) To evaluate X, XI and XII Biology textbooks in secondary schools in Yemen. (3) To find out if achievement of students can be improved through programmed instruction.
The hypotheses of the study was that there is no significant difference
in achievement of students who learned Biology “Unity of Life and
Tissues" through programmed instruction method and those who learned it
through traditional instructional method.
Sample consisted of 28 Biology teachers and 320 students for the control and experimental groups of class eleven taking biology as a science subject belonging to the education office in Sana’s city.
Questionnaire was used as tool for obtaining the responses of Biology teachers regarding evaluation of textbooks using survey method and an Achievement test for assessing the achievement of students. The control pretest posttest group design was used. The programmed texts were divided into 207 frames. Each part consisted of 14 frames to be taught in one class of period of 45 minute with total 15 class periods.
The study was survey as well as experimental type.Data were analyzed by using frequency.
The findings of the study were as follows: (1) The textbook concentrated on memory of knowledge of facts more than skills and attitude. (2) The Biology teachers are not satisfied with the production, evaluation, content and elements of the eleventh class Biology textbook. (3) The textbook concentrates on cognitive aspects and neglects affective and skill aspects. (4) Teachers were satisfied with illustration, language of textbook and activities. (5) Overall the eleventh class Biology textbook in Yamen is not fulfilling the expected level of textbook evaluation in matters of content, presentation, elements of textbook, and production. The textbook needs improvement in these areas. (6) The attainment of the second secondary class students who studied “Unit of Life and Tissue Unit" in Biology through programmed instruction was higher than the attainment of the same class students who studied the same units in Biology by traditional instruction. (7) Even though, experimental and control groups were equivalent before beginning the experiment, achievement of experimental group was higher in comparison to control group which indicates that the programmed instruction method may be used successfully in teaching Biology.
