The objectives of study were: (1) To study the existing facilities available for teaching of history in secondary schools in rural area of Beed district. (2) To study the professional preparation of history teachers. (3) To study the method and techniques which are followed in teaching of history. (4) To suggest measures which can help to improve the teaching of history. 

Sample comprised 200 secondary schools situated in rural area of Beed district during the research period 1993-94. Schools were selected by cluster sampling. 

The questionnaire was given to all teachers in secondary schools in rural area of Beed districts. 

The data were analyzed by computing percentage.

The findings of study were: (1) The teachers who responded to the questionnaire were trained. (2) 50% teachers were B.A. or M.A. with history. It meant 50% teachers had history subject at their graduate or post-graduate level. (3) 50% teachers did not have history neither as special nor subsidiary at their degree level. It was not a satisfactory position so far as teaching of history is concerned. (4) 50% teaches did not have history method at their professional degree level. (5) 50% rural history teachers did not have sufficient academic as well as professional knowledge of history subject. It was very pitiable position of history teaching. (6) Most of the rural teachers had more experience of teaching of history to higher classes (VIII to X) than lower classes (V to VIII). (7) The range of experience was from 1 to 10 years. It meant that the teachers who responded to the questionnaire represented different year of experience. (8) History teachers taught not only history but other subjects also. (9) The subjects were allotted as per the need of the schools and not according to teachers’ qualification and interest or choice. It was also not satisfactory position. (10) Activities of collecting historical objects, researching of historical events, and visiting historical places were very less. (11) Most of the teachers have read very few reference books, magazine, historical novels, drama books etc. (12) 50% teachers participated in discussions, symposium, and workshops. It was also revealed that only few teachers were interested in such activities. (13) None of the teachers had written simple articles in the magazine. (14) None of the teachers who responded to the questionnaire had undertaken any research project. (15) 30% teachers participated in the subject Teachers’ Association. (16) 50% teachers saw historical dramas, films and exhibitions. It was very pleasant thing so far as history teaching is concerned. (17) The history teachers were interested to attend workshops at nearest institute for professional preparation. (18) Majority of teachers (60%) expected that there would be at least two more periods per week for teaching history. (19) Very few reference books of history were in the library.
