The objectives of the study were: (1) To know the views of the principals of secondary schools, the leading persons of the society and the educationists about the expected role of a teacher. (2) To compare the views of the principals of secondary schools and the leading persons of the society about the expected role of a teacher. 

The investigator prepared an opinionnaire and standardized it on a sample of 50 principals of secondary schools and 90 leading persons of the society.

The final opinionnaire contained 50 statements on a five point rating scale. The reliability of the opinionnaire by test - retest method with one-month interval, split-half method and Rulon’s method was .88, .88 and .97 respectively. The content validity and the concurrent validity (r = .76) were found to be satisfactory. The opinionnaire was administered on an incidental sample of 200 leading persons of the society and 200 principals of secondary schools of Gujarat. Ten prominent educationists of Gujarat were interviewed with a prepared questionnaire and their views were tape- recorded. 

The survey method was employed for the study.

The data collected with the opinionnaire were classified into individual opinions and item-wise opinions with respect to sex, age, professional experience and marital status of the subjects and CR and t- value were calculated. 

The major findings were: (1) There was a significant difference between the opinions of: male principals and male leading persons; principals and leading persons of age upto 45 years; principals and leading persons with the professional experience above ten years; and married principals and married leading persons of the society. (2) There was no significant difference of opinions among the leading persons as well as among the principals with respect to their sex, age, professional experience and marital status. (3) According to the principals and the leading persons, the teacher must perform all the institutional as well as the academic activities with the cooperation of one’s colleagues and pupils. The teachers are expected to create and maintain a healthy school climate. The teacher should guide the pupils to understand the importance of the environment and to maintain it, to participate in the relief work at the time of disasters, to refrain from drugs and to organize awareness programmes against superstitions, social and religious evils and evil customs. The teacher should discuss the issues and problems related to the pupils with their guardians and try to solve them. The teachers should celebrate social and national festivals with the cooperation of the society. (4) According to the educationists, a teacher should be a good professional, planner, classroom manager, lover of religion, motherly, practical, humble, regular, disciplined, curious, leader, secular, speaker, just, social reformer, respectful respectable, efficient counsellor and evaluator. The teachers should be informed about the society’s expectations regarding their role.  The society and institutions should also try to understand and fulfil the expectations of teachers if they expect the teacher to fulfil their expectations.
