Sengupta, Madhumala. (2005). Environmental Awareness of The Environmentally Active And Passive Students In Relation To Motivation And Academic Performance. Unpublished. Ph.D., Education. University of Calcutta.
The objectives of the study are to identify environmentally active and passive students and their possible differences in respect of different variables and to predict environmental action from the scores of motivational dimensions. Also, the research seeks to find out any relation that may exist between environmental awareness and academic achievement.
On the basis of Objectives, 16 Hypothesis are framed.
The sample was drawn from 19 schools situated in the city of Kolkata and South 24 Parganas, a district of West Bengal (India). The size of the sample is 400, divided into eight equal categories viz. UBSc, UGSc, SBSc, SGSc, UBH, UGH, SBH, SGH. In which U stands for urban, S for suburban, B for boys, G for girls, Sc for science and H for humanities.
Tools used in the study are - A Scale of Environmental Awareness prepared by P.K. Chakraborty and M. Sengupta, Motivation Towards Environment Scale, developed by Pelletier et.al. and the percentage of total marks in the secondary school leaving examination
The variables - The variables studied are environmental awareness, environmental action, different levels of motivation, place of residence, academic achievement, gender and course of study.
Apart from descriptive analysis for all sample groups and total groups, ANOVA and âtâ tests were used to find the relationship among variables, and regression analysis was done to find out the predictability of the scores in independent variables.
The research revealed environmental awareness may not always lead to environmental action, the relationship between the two being weak. The science group students appear to be more active and so are the suburban group students. But no difference was found in environmental awareness and action due to gender and academic performances. The most important finding is that the environmentally active and passive students differed in all levels of motivation. Introjected level of motivation emerged as the strongest predictor of environmental action indicating that internalised value system is likely to precipitate proenvironmental behaviour. Most of the findings are consistent with earlier researches.
The study has sought to establish a theoretical underpinning of environmental research.
