The objectives of study were: (1) To select sample schools according to the two types of schools: exclusively for girls and co-educational schools. (2) To prepare record sheets for finding out the causes of wastage. (3) To develop interview schedules for dropouts, parents of the dropouts, teachers and the headmasters, to gather data about the causes of wastage. (4) To gather the data from the basal year to the present year of the study to indicate the cases of promotion, stagnation, wastage and transfer school-wise and class-wise. (5) To classify the cause of wastage into appropriate categories to bring out frequency counts pertaining to the categories and to verify the hypotheses set for the purpose. (6) To draw conclusion by interpreting the analyzed data. (7) To suggest ways and means to avoid wastage incidences.
The hypothesis of study were: (1) There is no significant difference between the means of wastage counts of girls pertaining to co-educational Urdu medium high schools and Urdu medium high schools exclusively for girls of Jalgaon district. (2) There is no significant difference between the means of wastage counts of girls pertaining to urban based Urdu medium high schools and rural based Urdu medium high schools of Jalgaon district. (3) Social traditions are responsible for wastage incidences. (4) Religion Booboos and customs are responsible for wastage incidences. (5) Educational background of the family is responsible for wastage incidences. (6) Economical factors are responsible for wastage incidences. (7) The stagnation is responsible for wastage incidences.
Stratified random sampling procedure was adopted. Two schools from each four sub-strata were randomly selected (urban biased exclusively for girls schools, rural biased exclusively for girls schools, urban biased co-educational schools, rural biased co-educational schools). All the schools were of Urdu medium high school, along with eight head masters and thirty-two teachers.
An interview schedule was constructed for data collection.The study used descriptive survey method.
t-test, and percentage were used to analyze the data.
The findings of study were: (1) After testing the hypotheses the researcher found that the causes of wastage were location free and the school type free. (2) 73.95% wastage was found in Bhusawal, 65.95% in Jalgaon, 80% in Raver, 80% in Warangaon, 66.66% in Faizpur, 72.50% in Chopda and 89.47% in Pachora. (3) The total wastage in all the high school was 73.26%. (4) Only 26.74% girls could pass SSC examination March 1992. (5) The stagnation wastage was 36.80%. (6) The percentage of wastage was higher in standard XI and X and lowest in standard eighth. (7) Economical condition of the family was the most important reason of wastage. The scale score was found to be 83.92%. (9) Equal position on importance scale was adjusted for marriage as one of the reasons for wastage. The scale value was 83.92%. (10) Education of parent (scale value 80.55%), and social conditions (scale value 60.71%) were other important cause of wastage in education. (11) Percentage of illiteracy was found more in mothers than in fathers. (12) Percentage of wastage was higher in large families than that of small families. (13) 70.53% parents were of the opinion that Pardah is essential. Majority belongs to rural biased society. (14) 40.17% parents gave more importance to the education of the boys only. (15) 37.50% parents thought, “education is one of no use for the girls”. (16) 9.82% from the rural biased believed that educated girls adopt modern fashion.
