The objectives of study were: (1) To study the educational views of Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba under the following heads : Aims of Education, Syllabus, Teaching Methods, Teacher – Pupil Relationship, School Organization and Educational Agencies. (2) To study the situations which affect the educational philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave. (3) To highlight / bring into light the philosophical, psychological, social, spiritual and scientific facts which affect the educational philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave and to search for their educational basis. (4) To discuss the merits and demerits of educational thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave and to determine their place among the Indian educational philosophers. (5) To study whether the basic education plan up to Junior High School as proposed by Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave could be implemented under New Education Policy or not. (6) One of the main objective of the study is to propose such ideas so that the present education system could be implemented looking to the prevailing conditions of India.
The source of the study was literature related by Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave, Report of New Policy on Education (1986) and other literature.
In this Historical, Comparative, Descriptive, Ontological, Epistemological and Axiological study methods were used by researcher.
The research was Philosophical in nature. The content analysis was used for analyzing the data.
The findings of study were: (1) Mahatma Gandhi appears before us as a great social reformer, politician and educationists. (2) Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave present the basis for new education policy. (3) Those areas of education of the New Education Policy in which attempts have been made to bring changes are the same areas. (4) The philosophy of both Gandhiji and Vinobaji was same as per the aims of life but the work of Gandhiji was oriented towards independence of India whereas the work of Vinobaji was oriented towards social reformation, but the ultimate goal of both the educationists was all round development of children.
