Shailaja, H M. (2008). Effect of Concept Mapping Strategy in Physics on Achievement and Attitude of Students . Unpublished. ERIC, Education
Objectives of the study:
To develop and implement concept mapping as a strategy in few selected units of Physics for X standard students.
To develop achievement test in Physics for X standard students.
To develop attitude test towards concept mapping.
To study the attitude of student towards concept mapping.
To study the students reaction towards concept mapping strategy.
Sample of the study:
The sample of the study consists of 64 students where 32 students comprise of control and Experimental group respectively. In control group among 32 students, 22 are boys and 10 are girls where as in Experimental group 18 are Boys and 14 are girls.
Tools:
Concept Mapping Tool constructed by the investigator.
Achievement Tests on Physics constructed by the investigator.
Attitude Scale towards concept mapping constructed by the investigator.
Concept mapping reaction scale constructed by Rao. (2003).
Research Method:
The study is of Quasi experimental in nature, where in both control and experimental groups are considered. The experimental group is taken intact in its natural setting without controlling many variables. The control group was taught by conventional strategy and the experimental group was taught by using concept mapping as Instructional strategy. The intact classes of X standard as a whole were considered as experimental and control group for the study. The pretest, post test group design is adopted for the study.
Statistical Techniques:
Descriptive, Differential, Correlation and Percentage Analysis
Findings:
The present study was intended to study the effect of concept mapping strategy on the achievement and attitude of X standard students in Physics. The study revealed that the concept mapping strategy was effective than the traditional method of teaching Physics. The study showed that the achievement in Physics of students in the Experimental group was comparatively higher than that of the control group students.
Educational Implications:
Concept mapping strategy as an instructional method would be helpful to raise the achievement levels of students.
Concept mapping would help the students to develop in themselves the ability to think critically, creatively and vividly.
Concept mapping clubbed with other activities would be a better alternative to traditional methods of teaching any subject.
The objective of teaching learning process can be effectively achieved with Concept mapping.
Concept mapping resembles mind mapping or cognitive mapping. Therefore this strategy would help to develop among the children the ability to enquire about, understand and relate the concepts.
Concept mapping implies that the design of texts should be such that the complex relationships between the various aspects of the concept could be clearly identified.
Concept mapping could be used as an effective assessment tool.
Concept mapping strategy would help the teachers to communicate complex relationships between concepts as well as abstract concepts effectively to the students.
Concept mapping strategy would help in curriculum development and designing.
