The objectives of the study were as follows: (1) To identify the Values as reflected in the syllabus of Gujarati textbooks of standard VIII, IX and X. (2) To develop the programme for the development of Value Identification and Value Judgment with reference to the Values (Humanity, Nationalism, Perseverance, Love towards Nature and Acceptance of other’s Feelings) through Traditional Method of teaching. (3) To develop the programme for the development of Value Identification and Value Judgment with reference to the Values (Humanity, Nationalism, Perseverance, Love towards Nature and Acceptance of other’s Feelings) through Value Recognition Model. (4) To study the effectiveness of Traditional Teaching Model and Value Recognition Model for the development of Value Identification with reference to the selected Values. (5) To study the effectiveness of Traditional Teaching Model and Value Recognition Model for the development of Value Judgment with reference to the selected Values.
The population of the study was Gujarati medium secondary school students of Rajkot city and the contents of Gujarati textbooks for the year 2002-03. In the present study 89, 96 and 72 boys of standards VIII, IX and X whereas 89, 88 and 77 girls of standards VIII, IX and X (in all 257 boys and 254 girls) were selected using Purposive Sampling Technique.
The researcher had constructed and standardized a one out of four selection inventory as Value Recognition Inventory to measure Value Identification and Value judgement.
The Survey Method for the Identification of Values from the textbooks and Experimental Method (two incidental Groups Pre-test Post-test Design) to check the effectiveness of Value Recognition Model were selected for the research.
The experiment was duplicated in accordance with Sex of students.
The findings of the study were as follows: (1) From the 54, 56 and 65 contents of Gujarati textbooks of standard VIII, IX and X; 15, 16 and 17 Values were identified. (2) The Traditional Teaching Model was effective for the development of Value Identification and Judgment among IX standard male students for the teaching of Value: Acceptance of other’s Feelings whereas effective for the development of Value Identification and Judgment among X standard female students for the teaching of Value: Perseverance and Acceptance of other’s Feelings. (3) The Value Recognition Model of teaching was effective for the development of Value Identification and Judgment among males and females of standards VIII, IX and X for the teaching of good number of selected Values. (4) Teaching of Values for the development of Identification and Judgment of Values the Value Recognition Model was more effective as compared to Traditional Model of teaching.
