The objective of this study was to find out the effect of Open System Approach on Intellectual Development during adolescence using different variable such Socio-economic Status (SES), sex, age, standard and cognitive stages.

The sample comprised of 120 students belonged to VII and IX standards.

The standardized tools used were Raven s Progressive Matrices, SES. Along with these test was also made. The questions of Pre-est and Post-test were based on Piagetian task i.e. probability reasoning, conversation and proportional reasoning which were matched on cognitive levels.

It was an experimental study. Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design was used. The students of experimental group were exposed to open system approach (i.e. providing opportunities for active involvement in the programme in terms of options and constraints related to curriculum and environmental conditions according to the individuals intellectual capacities) based on treatment in the laboratory setting. No treatment was given to control group.

The data were analysed with the help of t-test.

The findings were: (1) The students of IX and VII standard accelerated to higher intellectual stage on exposure to open system approach based on treatment sessions. (2) Students of VII standard showed less acceleration in accordance to Piagetian Theory. (3) Sex did not affect the performance of students. (4) Students used previous knowledge in solving new problems based on same scheme of thought.
