(i) To develop music enrichment programme for the mentally challenged children. (ii) To orient mentally challenged children of experimental group to the music enrichment programme. (iii) To study the effect of music enrichment programme on academic achievement of mentally challenged children. (iv) To study the effect of music enrichment programme on adjustment of mentally challenged children. (v) To study the effect of music enrichment programme on level of consciousness of mentally challenged children.
A sample of 40 mentally challenged children (20 Experimental, 20 Control) of age group 5 to 15 years was randomly selected.
Academic performance scores of mentally challenged children were used for academic achievement. Self-constructed - adjustment scale for mentally challenged children was used for assessing adjustment. Self-constructed – consciousness scale for mentally challenged children was used for assessing consciousness.
Quasi experimental pre-test, post-test design was used.
Statistical Mean, SD, Mann-Whitney U-test and graphical representation were used for the analysis of data.
It is inferred from the findings of this study that music plays a significant role in various achievement, adjustment and consciousness related aspects of mentally retarded children.
Knowledge about effect of music enrichment programme on academic achievement, adjustment and level of consciousness of mentally challenged children can be used to design the appropriate and effective educational programme.
