The objectives of study were: (1) To assess the relative expenditure incurred by different managements on day schools. (2) To assess the relative expenditure incurred by different managements on their residential schools. (3) To assess the relative Performance of students studying in different groups of schools. (4) To assess the relative Performance of students hailing from different Caste Backgrounds. (5) To assess the relative Performance of students hailing from different Caste Backgrounds. (6) To assess the relative Performance of students hailing from different Community Backgrounds. (7) To assess the relative Performance of students hailing from different Income groups. (8) To assess the relative Performance of students hailing from different Parental Occupational Backgrounds. (9) To assess the relationship between investments made on the Education of students and their Performance.
Formulated hypothesis were: (1) Different managements do not incur expenditure on their residential schools in the same measure. (2) Different managements do not incur expenditure on their day schools in the same measure. (3) The Performance of students studying in different groups of schools is not identical. (4) There will not be any difference in the Performance of boys and girls. (5) There will be a difference in the Performance of OC, BE, SC and ST students. (6) There will be a difference in the Performance of students hailing from different community Backgrounds (urban, semi-urban, and rural). (7) There will be a difference in the Performance of students belonging to different Parental Income groups. (8) There will be a difference in the Performance of students hailing from different Parental Occupational Background. (9) There will not be any relationship between the expenditure incurred and the students Performance.
Sample comprised of 540 pupils. The biographical information of students was collected through Personal Data Blank developed by the investigator.
Tool to collect information related to expenditure was developed. It had two parts. Through part one, the private expenditure incurred by the student or his parents or guardian was collected and institutional expenditure incurred by the management of the schools was collected through part two. . The Achievement Test for class IX was standardized in subject areas, like, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Social studies.
Through Stratified Random Sampling, 18 schools were selected. From each school 30 students were selected.
The data were analyzed through ANOVA followed by t-test and Rank Difference Method of correlation.
The findings of study were: (1) While the Navodaya Residential Schools incur the highest non-recurring expenditure, the Andhra Pradesh Government day schools incur the lowest. (2) While the Navodaya and Andhra Pradesh Residential Schools incur the highest per capita recurring expenditure, the private day and private residential schools incur the lowest. (3) While the Navodaya Residential Schools incur the highest total expenditure, the government day schools incur the lowest. (4) The mean Performance levels of residential schools is slightly better than that of the day schools, though the difference is not significant. (5) Central day schools record the highest Performance level while Andhra Pradesh Government day schools record the lowest. (6) Boys perform better than girls. (7) Performance levels of various Caste Groups correspond with the hierarchy of Caste levels. (8) The Performance levels of students differ with the community background. Urban students perform better than the semi-urban students and the semi-urban students perform better than rural students. (9) Performance levels of students correspond totally with the income levels of parents. (10) Students whose parents have higher levels of occupation perform better than the students whose parents’ occupational levels are low. (11) There is no close association between the investment made on schools and the Performance of the students obtained. (12) Central day schools Performance better than Navodaya residential schools where the expenditure is five times more than that of Central day schools. (13) The Andhra Pradesh Government schools spend more than what the Central day schools spend, but the Performance of students in Andhra Pradesh Government day schools is inferior to the Performance of students at Central day schools. (14) Though the expenditure incurred by the residential schools is more than the double of what is spent in day schools. The Performance of the students of both these two categories of students is almost same.
