Objectives of the study:
To map the domain of adolescents from different ecological setting.
To understand the way adolescents construe and justify the modality of resolving value-behavior contractions.
To identify possible ways of promoting values among adolescents.
Sample:
A sample of 160 adolescents from two types of societal background(rural and urban) two gender groups (male and female) belonging to two age groups (younger 12-14 years and elder 16-18 years) participants in the study. The rural adolescents were studying in institution situated in villages of Salempure Tehsil of Deoria district while 80 were from Gorakhpur city in eastern Uttar Pradesh. All the participants were studying in secondary and higher secondary grades and belong to middle social class background.

Findings:
Results revealed that adolescents generated twenty two values such as Courtesy, Helpfulness, Intellect, Industrious, Truthfulness, Honesty, Good manners, Equality, Love and Peace, Patriotism, Self respect, Unity, Wealth, Independence, Responsibility, Respect for others, Courage, Discipline, Religious social services, Self identity and Simplicity.
Rural participants viewed Courtesy, Equality, Helpfulness, Truthfulness, Honesty, Industrious and Intellect as important values while urban participants gave their preferences for courtesy, Industrious, Helpfulness, Good manners, Honesty and Truth fullness.
The value of Courtesy was most preferred by boys and girls both. However, among other values boys preferred Good manners, Equality, Industrious and Truthfulness while female participants preferred honesty, intellect truthfulness and industrious.
The life experiences of urban adolescents were related to the values of Honesty, Truthfulness, Good Conduct, Respect for Truthfulness, Honesty and Peace values. Also, they had experiences related to reasoning, intellect and love. The rural students life experiences related to the values of hardwork, industrious and religiously.
Urban students rated the most to Reciprocity if followed by Situational Demand while rural students viewed Intrinsic temperament and reciprocity as the most rated favorable situation. Urban students viewed ‘Respect from others’ and Peace of Mind and Well being for themselves while for the society the most frequent category was Social Harmony, ‘Setting Ideal Role’ and ‘Mutual respect’. On the other hand, the rural adolescents viewed the outcome for self as Status and Recognition and ‘Progress and Success’ while for the society the rural students viewed ‘Societal Achievement’ and ‘Social Good’ as important.
