The objectives of the study were: (1) To enumerate the various aspects of the ecological studies prescribed in secondary school syllabus with special reference to environmental education. (2) To construct a reliable and valid tool to measure environmental awareness of the student teachers. (3) To develop the environmental awareness program for the student teachers. (4) To study the effect of environmental awareness program on environmental awareness level of student teachers in relation to sex and education qualification. (5) To offer some recommendation and suggestions for imparting better environmental education in secondary schools.

The hypothesis of the study were: (1) There is no significant difference in the mean score of the environmental awareness of student teachers of experimental and control groups. (2) There is no significant difference in the mean score of the environmental awareness in relation to sex of student teachers. (3) There is no significant difference in the mean score of the environmental awareness of educational qualifications of student teachers. (4) There is no first order interaction effect of treatment and sex on the mean scores of environmental awareness of student teachers. (5) There is no interactive effect of treatment and educational qualification on the mean scores of environmental awareness of student teachers. (6) There is no interactive effect of sex and educational qualification on the mean scores of environmental awareness of student teachers. (7) There is no interactive effect of all the variables viz., treatment, sex and educational qualification on the mean scores of environmental awareness of student teachers.

Tools used were personal biodata sheet and environmental awareness scale constructed and standardized by the investigator. The reliability coefficient of scale was 0.90 (test-retest method), 0.79 (split-half method). Concurrent validity of scale was also established and it was found to be 0.92. An Environmental Awareness Program (EAP) was also prepared by the investigator for experimental group. The total duration of EAP was six weeks (5 period per-week) with 60 minute for concept and 30 minutes for discussion.

The findings of the study were: (1) The present environmental awareness scale (EAS) is a valid and reliable tool for measuring environmental awareness (EA) of secondary school student teachers. (2) The Environmental Awareness Program (EAP) was found to be effective to develop the environmental awareness of secondary student teachers. (3) The main effect of treatment i.e. EAP is highly significant with reference to EA of the student teachers. (4) All the first order interaction effects are not found to be significant. (5) Second order interaction effect of treatment X sex X educational qualification is also not found to be significant.
