The objectives of the study were: (1) To find out the effect of gender on achievement test of mathematics. (2) To find out the attitudinal effect on the achievement test for mathematics. (3) To find out the effect of home environment, School environment, peer group within and outside the School on the achievement test of mathematics.
The hypotheses were: (1) The students’ attitude towards mathematics has
no positive relationship with the achievement in mathematics. (2) The
students’ attitude towards the School has no positive relationship with
the achievement in mathematics. (3) The students’ attitude towards
mathematics teacher has no positive relationship with the achievement in
mathematics. (4) Gender of the students has no positive relationship
with the achievement in mathematics. (5) The class environment has no
positive relationship with the achievement in mathematics. (6) The
School environment has no positive effect on achievement in mathematics.
(7) The home environment has no positive effect on achievement in
mathematics. (8) School type has no effect on the achievement in
mathematics.
Sample comprised of 797 students of VI, VII and VIII grades of different Secondary School of Gwalior city. Cluster technique was used for sampling. Attitude scale, and a Questionnaire developed by investigator. The tools used for data collection were achievement test in mathematics, The study was descriptive in nature. Data was analyzed by calculating Mean, SD, and ANOVA statistical techniques.
The findings of the study were: (1) There were no significant differences in the achievement in mathematics between the boys and girls of grades VI, VII and VIII with a few exception which could be explained as the effect of other factors, like, mental stress and physical health. (2) The attitude towards mathematics and mathematics teachers between boys and girls did not show any particular pattern. (3) There were no differences in the achievement between the students of different grades - barring a few- which could be established as the effect of other factors like- psychological stress, home and School environment etc. (4) There were no differences in the attitude between different grades towards mathematics teacher and the subject mathematics of different grades with an accepted of few grades. That could be due to other factors, like, psychological stress, home and School environment, teachers’ attitude towards the students and the teaching methods. (5) The attitude towards the mathematics teachers and the subject of the boys of different grades and different schools did not reveal any definite pattern. In some cases there were significant difference in their attitudes but that could be explained as the effect of other factors, like, method of teaching, classroom interaction and peer group interaction. (6) The attitude towards the mathematics teachers and the subjects of girls of different grades and from different school did not reveal any specific differences barring a few. That difference could be due to any other factors, like, home and School environment, peer group, teachers efficiency anxiety level, teachers personality etc. (7) It was found that there were hardly any differences among the students of different Schools (English and Hindi medium School, missionary or non missionary type School) in their achievements in mathematics and attitude towards the subject teacher and the subject mathematics. Only in few cases the effect of attitude on the achievement could be found out. The effect of attitude towards the mathematics teacher had a positive correlation with achievement in particular subject. On the other hand there was a negative correlation with achievements in particular subject. (8) It was revealed that most of the parents were not aware of their wards study hours, syllabus and teaching in the school. Most of the mothers were quite serious about their child’s achievement and some of the father’s had taken the achievement in mathematics very seriously.
