The objectives of study were: (1) To study the admission procedure of National Open School in Mumbai. (2) To study the prevailing student support services in National Open School with respect to (a) Physical facilities in Genital, (b) Library facilities, (c) Laboratory facilities, (d) Printed Material (its suitability), (e) Personal contact programs PCP’s (their frequency, nature, process and purposes severed etc.), and (f) Assignments (their nature, marking procedures process of commenting etc.). (3) To study the administrative backup at the study centers of National Open School. (4) To study the present status of examination and evaluation system in National Open School. (5) To make suggestions for improvement of working system in National Open School. 

The tools used were Questionnaire for students (Split-half reliability=0.83), Questionnaire for counselors (Split-half reliability=0.75), Questionnaire for coordinators and Interview schedule for students, counselors and co-coordinators. All tools were developed by the researcher. 

Percentage was employed for data analysis.    

The findings of study were: (1) The flexibility and innovativeness of the open learning system is particularly suited to the diverse requirement of the present day need of the learners. It broadens the access to education and helps the drop-outs to get back to the main stream. (2) National Open Schools plays the leading role in open school system. (3) Students from National Open Schools are satisfied with the flexibility of admission procedure and they get the study centre of their choice with queries answered. (4) Study material is clear and easy to comprehend and arranged in a logical sequence but the syllabus is vast. (5) There is delay in receipt of course material but majority of the students are satisfied with the course material. (6) Some amount of satisfaction from students was shown related with the available physical facilities at the study centers. (7) There is inadequacy of audio and video program, lack of broadcast and library facilities are not satisfactory. (8) Number of counselor activities are less in number. (10) Examinations are conducted at different study centers during vacation time. Evaluation of assignment is done timely. (11) Counselors mainly adopt lecture and group discussion method while teaching and provide feedback. (12) The overall administrative back up is satisfactory. (13) Co-coordinators maintain up to date record, dispatch program-wise assignments, and grade lists. (14) Study centers provide satisfactory student support sections and to some extent timely, regular and clear. (15) Information regarding time table and examination dates are given to the students from time to time.
