The objectives of the study were: (1) To find out the effect of socio-economic status on academic achievement. (2) To find out the effect of study habits on academic achievement. (3) To find out the effect of academic motivation on academic achievement. (4) To find out the total impact of socio-economic status, study habits and academic motivation on academic achievement.
Hypotheses were: (1) Socio-economic status is not significantly related with academic achievement. (2) Academic motivation is not significantly related with academic achievement. (3) Socio-economic status, study habits and academic motivation show commonly no significance with academic achievement. (5) Sex has no bearing on the achievement.
Sample included 398 boys and 165 girls from ten higher secondary schools of rural area from Jalgaon district. Lottery method was used for selection of sample.
Tools for measuring the variables were Socio-economic Status Scale (Rural) by Udai Pareek and G. Trivedi, Study Habits Inventory by B. V. Patel and Academic Motivation Scale (JIM) by Jack Frymier.
The study was based on co-relational ex post-facto survey method.Data were analyzed by using t-test and correlation.
The findings of the study were: (1) In both arts and commerce streams, the percentage of boys was more in lower middle class while it was more in the middle class for girls. (2) Both boys and girls from Science stream, the percentage was more against the middle class of socio-economic status. (3) Socio-economic status exerted no influence on Academic Achievement in case of commerce male and female students. (4) Socio-economic status influenced academic achievement in case of Arts and Science male and female students. (5) Higher SES shows significant difference in Academic Achievement than middle SES students. (6) Lower SES shows significant difference in Academic Achievement than Higher SES students. (7) Middle SES shows significant difference in Academic Achievement than Lower SES students. (8) Students from Arts, Commerce and Science streams show more percentage against the normal study habits except in case of females from Arts. The same percentage was against the normal study habits and good study habit. (9) Study habits exerted influence on academic achievement in case of Arts, Commerce and Science male and female students. (10) Good study habits shown significant difference in academic achievement than normal study habit students. (11) Poor study habits shown significant difference in academic achievement than good study habit students. (12) Normal study habits had no significant difference in academic achievement than poor study habits students. (13) All students from Arts, Commerce and Science show average Academic motivation. (14) Academic motivation exerted influence on academic achievement in case of students from Science stream both male and female as well as on male students from arts stream. (15) Academic motivation exerted no influence on academic achievement in case of students from commerce stream both male and female as well as female students of Arts stream. (16) Higher Academic motivation shown significant difference in academic achievement than lower academic motivation students. (17) SES, study habits and academic motivation exerted influence collectively on academic achievement in case of students from Science stream male and female students. (18) Socio economic status, study habits and academic motivation exerted influence collectively on academic achievement in case of students from Arts and Commerce stream except Arts boys.
