The objectives of the study were: (1) To study the life values of children at junior high school level. (2) To compare the life values of students belonging to different categories of family background. (3) To study the self-concept of children at junior high school level. (4) To compare the self-concept of the students belonging to different categories of family background.
For the sample five schools of boys and five schools of girls were selected randomly. Then 20-20 students of class VI and VIII from each of the selected school were selected by cluster sampling. In this way 200-200 students of class VI and VIII respectively were included in the sample.
Tools used were: Sadgun Vikas Mapni by S. Srivastava, Value Scale by Shary and Verma, Self-concept Scale by Ahluwalia, S.P., and Family background by Gupta, R.P.
Survey method was used to conduct the study.
Data was analyzed with the help of mean, SD, and critical ratio.
The findings of the study were: (1) Aesthetic, economic and religious values of girls of class VI were found to be higher than the boys. While only religious value among the girls of class VIII was found higher than the boys. (2) Knowledge, aesthetic and health values among the girls of class VI were higher while among the girls of class VIII economic and social values were found higher. (3) No significant difference was found between the various values of the boys of class VI and VIII. (4) No significant difference was found among the values namely, knowledge, economic, patriotism, social, potential and piece of the students of class VI and class VIII having different family background. (5) Aesthetic, economic and religious values among girls were found to be higher than the boys on the basis of family background. (6) Self-concept among the boys was found higher than the girls at class VI and VIII level. (7) Self-concept of the girls of class VIII was found to higher than the girls of class VI. But there was no significant difference between the self- concept of boys of class VI and VIII. (8) Self-concept of the students of higher class was found to be higher than students of lower class.
