A, Sharma. (1999). A Comparative Study of the Effectiveness of Science Teaching Methods Used by B.Ed. Students and Trained Graduate Teachers in Agra City. Unpublished. Ph.D., Education. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Agra, U.P.
The objectives of the study were: (1) To study the reaction of male and female student teachers towards effectiveness of method of teaching science. (2) To study the understanding of male and female student teachers towards effectiveness of methods of teaching science. (3) To study the competence of male and female student teachers towards effectiveness of methods of teaching science. (4) To study the reaction of male and female trained graduate teachers towards effectiveness of method of teaching science. (5) To study the understanding of male and female trained graduate teachers towards effectiveness of method of teaching science. (6) To study the competence of male and female trained graduate teachers towards effectiveness of method of teaching science.
The hypotheses of the study were: (1) There is no significant difference between the reaction of student teachers and trained graduate science teachers towards the method of teaching science. (2) There is no significant difference between the understanding of student teachers and trained graduate teachers towards the methods of teaching science. (3) There is no significant difference between the teaching competence of student teachers and trained graduate science teachers towards the methods of teaching science. (4) There is no significant difference between the reaction of male and female student teachers towards methods of teaching science. (5) There is no significant difference between the understanding of male and female student teachers towards the methods of teaching science. (6) There is no significant difference between the teaching competence of male and female student teachers towards the methods of teaching science. (7) There is no significant difference between the reaction of male and female trained graduate teachers towards methods of teaching science. (8) There is no significant difference between the understanding of male and female trained graduate teachers towards the methods of teaching science. (9) There is no significant difference between the teaching competence of male and female trained graduate teachers towards the methods of teaching science.
Sample consisted of 207 pre-service and in- service teachers selected on the basis of Stratified Random Sampling from Agra city.
Tools used were Reaction Scale toward Science Teaching Method and Understanding Test towards method of teaching science constructed by the investigator
The study was descriptive in nature.
t-test and correlation were used for data analysis.
The findings of the study were: (1) Student teachers felt better inclined towards all the aspects tested about their reaction, understanding and competence regarding the effectiveness of science teaching methods than their counter part in service teachers. (2) With regard to competence, in-service teachers both male and female stood slightly better then student teachers. (3) Though student teachers seemed better and more enthusiastic to improve their teaching competence in methods of teaching science, yet in-service teachers tended to be more competent in their teaching competence than student teachers regarding teaching methods of science. (4) The use of science teaching methods by student teachers as well as in-service teachers make their teaching methods more effective than those who did not use any of them. (5) The overall reaction, understanding and teaching competence of student teachers as well as in-service teachers determined the nature of effectiveness of their methods of teaching science. (6) There existed a significant positive correlation among student teachers scores with regard to their reaction and understanding, understanding and teaching competence, and reaction and teaching competence about the methods of science teaching. The same trend was seen in case of in-service teachers.
