The objectives of the study were: (1) To determine the personality traits and values of male and female adolescent students. (2) To determine the personality traits and values of rural and urban male and female adolescent students. (3) To determine the personality traits and values of male and female adolescent students belonging to high, middle and low socio-economic status. (4) To determine the personality traits and values of male and female adolescent students belonging to ordinary and superior intellectual level. (5) To make in depth study of personality traits and values of male and female adolescents which will provide a new direction to future researches.
The hypotheses were: (1) There is no significant difference between the personality traits and values of male and female adolescent students separately. (2) There is no significant difference between the personality traits and values of rural and urban male and female adolescent students. (3) There is no significant difference between the personality traits and values of male and female adolescent students belonging to ordinary and superior intellectual level. (4) There is no significant difference between the personality traits and values of male and female adolescent students belonging to high and middle, middle and low and high and low socio-economic status separately. (5) There is no significant difference between the personality traits and values of male and female adolescent students of rural and urban area separately belonging to ordinary and superior intellectual level.
Stratified Random Sampling technique was used to select the sample. The sample comprised of 720 students from Aligarh Janpad.
Personality Traits Questionnaire by Singh, R., Value Scale by Ojha, R.; Socio-economic Scale by Chatterji, B. and Singh, S. were used for data collection.
Present study was ex-post-facto in nature.
Data were analyzed with the help of Mean, Standard deviation and t-test.
The findings were: (1) There was significant difference in the mean of the personality traits, like, truth, nonviolence, renunciation (aparigrah), celibacy (Brahmacharya), no stealing (asteya), purification (shauch), satisfaction, self-recitation (swadhyaya), God, religious (Pranidhan), intelligence and penance (tap) etc. of male and female adolescent students while no significant difference was found in patience. Rural and urban groups were significantly different in terms of renunciation, purification and patience. Significant difference was seen in the means of the personality traits, like, God, religious, intelligence, nonviolence and patience of ordinary and high intelligent adolescent students. There was significant difference in the mean of personality traits, like, celibacy, no stealing, purification, satisfaction, truth and penance of the male and female adolescent students belonging to high and middle socio-economic status. There was significant difference in the means of personality traits, like, celibacy, no stealing, purification, satisfaction, penance, self-recitation, God, religious intelligence and patience of the male and female adolescent students belonging to high and low socio-economic status. While the male and female adolescent students belonging to middle and low socioeconomic status significantly differed on truth, nonviolence, renunciation, celibacy, no stealing, purification, satisfaction, self- recitation, God, religious, intelligence, and penance. There was significant difference in the means of personality traits, like, God, religious, truth, nonviolence, intelligence, and patience of ordinary and high intelligent adolescent students of rural area while urban ordinary and high intelligent students differed on God, religious, and patience. Rural and urban students belonging to high socio-economic status significantly differed on self-recitation while rural and urban students belonging to middle class significantly differed on purification, patience and satisfaction and urban and rural adolescents belonging to low socio-economic status differed on truth and non-violence. (2) There was significant difference in theoretical, economic, aesthetic, religious, social and political values of male and female adolescent students. While no significant difference was found in any type of values of rural and urban students. Similarly no significant difference was found in any type of values of the adolescent students ordinary and high intelligent group, high and middle socio-economic status, high and low socio – economic status, middle and low socio-economic status group as well as ordinary and high intelligent students of rural and urban area and the students of high socio-economic status and middle and low socio-economic status of rural and urban area separately.
