S, Tiwari S. (2000). Role of Psychological Factors in Discipline Selection by the Intermediate (10+2) students of Gwalior City. Unpublished. Ph.D., Psychology. Jiwaji University, Gwalior, M.P.
The objective was to study Intellectual Ability, Educational Interest and Educational Achievement factors influencing and determining the process of Discipline selection of students.
The hypotheses were: (1) There exists no significant difference in the
Intellectual Ability of students of all the three Discipline Groups
(Science, Commerce, Arts) with respect to total and Gender separately.
(2) There exists no significant difference in the Commerce Interest of
students of all the three Discipline groups with respect to Gender and
total separately. (3) There exists no significant difference in the Arts
Interest of students of all the three Discipline groups with respect to
Gender and total separately. (4) There exists no significant difference
in the Science Interest of students of all the three Discipline groups
with respect to Gender and total separately. (5) There exists no
significant difference in the Educational Achievement of students of all
the three Discipline groups with respect to Gender.
For the research, 300 students were selected through Stratified Random Sampling Technique. All the students were studying in different Disciplines in Government Higher Secondary Schools. For Educational Achievement, marks of previous examination (10th) were considered as a basis.
Standardized tools were used for data collection. These tools were Intellectual Ability Tests by Dr. P. N. Mehrotra and Educational Interest Tests by Dr. S.P. Kulshrestha.
Present research was an Ex-post Facto type of investigation. Data analysis was done on the basis of t-value.
The findings were: (1) Influence of Intellectual Ability, Educational Interest and Educational Achievement were clearly found in Discipline selection. Students of Science, Commerce and Arts Groups differ in their Intellectual Ability. (2) Intellectual Ability of Girls of Science and Commerce was almost similar whereas Girl students of Arts were found comparatively weaker from Intellectual Ability point of view. (3) Intellectual Ability of Boys of all the three Discipline Groups is different. (4) Intellectual Ability was not influenced by Gender. Significant differences were found between Girls and Boys of Science Group. (5) Students of Science and Commerce Groups have clear difference in their Commerce Interest and the results of the students of Science and Arts Groups too seem to be correlated with the above groups. (6) In the area of Commerce Interest, Interest of Girls of Science and Arts Group is almost same. Likewise no significant difference was seen in the Boys of Commerce and Arts Groups but clear difference was seen in the Interest in Commerce of Girls of Commerce and Arts Groups. (11) With respect to Arts Interest, significant difference was found in the Educational Interest of Girls and Boys of Science, Commerce and Arts Groups. (12) Groups of all three disciplines have significant difference in the Science related Interest under Educational Interest. Likewise Girls of all three disciplines show significant difference whereas no significant difference was found in the Science related Interest of Boys of Commerce and Arts groups. (13) No significant influence of Gender was found in Commerce Discipline in the study of Science Educational Interest, whereas significant influence of Gender was found in the Science and Arts Groups. (14) Influence of Educational Achievement is seen on different Discipline Groups.
