The objectives of the investigation were: (1) To determine the level of
institutional climate and teacher morale of the higher secondary
schools of Gujarat state. (2) To study the relationship between type of
school and institutional climate. (3) To study the relationship of
institutional climate with income, age, qualification, teaching
experience, father’s education, father’s profession, caste and sex of
teachers. (4) To study the relationship of teacher morale with area and
type of school. (5) To study the relationship of teacher morale and
student control ideology of teachers with income, age, qualification,
teaching experience, father’s education, father’s profession,
socio-economic status, caste and sex of teachers. (6) To study the
student control ideology of teachers. (7) To study the relationship of
student control ideology of teachers with size, area and type of school.
(8) To study the relationship among institutional climate, teacher
morale and student control ideology of teachers.
The sample consisted of 1006 teachers teaching in grades XI & XII in
12 districts of Gujarat. The areas of Kutch and Saurashtra were
excluded from the study.
The data were collected by
administering Institutional Climate Description Questionnaire by A.
Mehta; Teacher Morale Opinionnaire by A. Mehta and a Scale of Student
Control Ideology (adapted from PCI by Willower, Eidell and Hoy).
It was a Survey study.
The data were analysed with Chi-Square Test.
The major findings were: (1) About 53% of higher secondary schools had moderate institutional climate, 42% schools had closed climate and only 5% schools had open climate. (2) Area and type of school were significantly related to teacher morale as well as to student control ideology of teachers. (3) School climate was significantly related to the teacher related variables, like, qualification, socio-economic status, father’s education and father’s profession. (4) Teacher morale was significantly related to the teacher related variables like income, qualification, teaching experience, father’s profession, caste and socio-economic status. (5) Student control ideology of teachers was significantly related to the teacher related variables, like, income, caste and sex. (6) No significant relationship was found among institutional climate, teacher morale and student control ideology of teachers
