The objectives of study were: (1) To analyze the enrollment of students in the selected Non-formal Education (NFE) Centres . (2) To measure the language skills of the boys and girls at the selected non-formal education centres. (3) To measure the numeracy skills of the boys and girls at the selected non-formal education centres. (4) To measure the awareness of boys and girls towards the environment at the selected non-formal education centres. (5) To measure the NVTI scores of at the selected non-formal education centres. (6) To analyze the profile of teachers in the selected non-formal education centres on the basis of personal information. (7) To analyze the profile of teachers in the selected non-formal education centres on the basis of information regarding the centers. (8) To analyze the profile of teachers in the selected non-formal education centres on the basis of teaching-learning experience provided. (9) To analyze the profile of teachers in the selected non-formal education centres on the basis of impact of the non-formal education program. (10) To analyze the profile of supervisors in the selected non-formal education centres on the basis of personal information. (11) To analyze the profile of supervisors in the selected non-formal education centres on the basis of information regarding the centre. (12) To analyze the profile of supervisors in the selected non-formal education centres on the basis of impact of the non-formal education program.
The sample consisted of students, instructors and supervisors from the non-formal centres run by Reach Education Action Program, Universal Education Program, Pratham, YMCA, Vimla Vikas Kendra Dockyard and Jeevan Nirvanha Niketan in Andheri, Mumbai. The sampling techniques used were purposive and convenient sampling.
The tools used for the research were NVTI by Nayde, and those developed by the researcher were interview schedule for students, questionnaire for teachers, questionnaire for supervisors, Achievement test for language ability (Reliability coefficient=0.81), and Achievement for awareness of value (Reliability coefficient=0.84).
It was an assessment study using the descriptive survey method.
The statistical measures used for data analysis were percentile rank for the achievement scores of the students from the various NFE centres.
The findings of study were: (1) The concentration of students in NFE centers is in the age group 9-12 years, which accounts for 76.2% of the sample. This percentage corresponds to 72.1% drop out rate. (2) Girls in general fared better than boys. In particular boys fared better than girls in numeracy. (3) The NVTI scores revealed that there was no significant difference between the mental perception of boys and girls. (4) 77.33% teachers are in the age range 20 to 40 years. (5) 88.88% supervisor are in the age range 20 to 40 years. (6) Much is done by teachers and supervisors who are not even half as qualified as their counter parts in the formal system.
