Objectives of the study :The study was intended to educate rural and slum women as well as school children on better hygienic practices through informal and formal education respectively.
Six villages and two urban slums in Coimbatore city wherein 725 women were selected to understand their attitudes and behaviour towards environment.
An education programme was planned to inculcate hygienic practices among women through various communication methods. To comply with the request of the women specific action programmes were organized. Total 450 children, 150 from the three schools who were studying in III, IV and V standards were selected. Course content was framed and the children were educated on environmental concepts.
A survey method was used by the researcher.
Data were analyzed with the help of percentages.
The study revealed that: (1) Educating children with more of practical orientation could improve their knowledge. (2) Environmental education should not be limited to the imparting of information but go beyond this to create values and attitudes regarding natural and environmental phenomena.
