The objectives of study were: (1) To Study Malviyaji’s life and personality profile against the background of contemporary Indian scene. (2) To Study Malviyaji as a many – sided genius: a teacher, a journalist, a lawyer, a congress worker and a legislator. (3) To Study Malviyaji’s philosophy and his contributions to the society and country. (4) To study Malaviyaji’s view on the need, importance and aims of education and also his views on various spheres of education, viz. primary, secondary, higher, vocational, technical, agricultural, physical and military, commerce and banking, women’s, religious, national and education for the depressed. His views on medium of instruction, students’ participation in politics and his exhortation to students are also within the scope of this study. (5) To study the background, aims and formation of the Banaras Hindu University and also the courses provided therein. (6) To study the crisis in present system of Indian education and examine the relevance of Malviyaji’s educational thoughts as remedial measures for the said crisis.
The primary sources of data were Malviyaji speeches, article. Letters, writing, statement, newspaper accounts, addresses, notes and memorandum. The secondary source of data was books, biographies, articles, and commemoration value & research sports on Malviya Ji.Data were also collected through Interview.
The nature of present study was mainly Historical and Descriptive.
The data were analyzed with the help of Content Analysis Method.
The findings of study were: (1) Malaviya ji philosophy of education was correlated with his concept of social welfare. (2) He conceived education as a tool for moral development, materialistic advancement and national progress. (3) He considered education as the most effective and for – reaching, preventing measure of various ills and evils and also a tool for removing the prevalent ones in the society. (4) Malviya ji felt that education alone could promote nationalism and weld the various units into a strong and self – sufficient nation that will discriminate her rich culture among the nations of the world. (5) To provide education in Sanskrit, science and technology, religion, agriculture, physical culture, fine arts and other subjects, women’s education and a residential university on the pattern of the ancient universities of Taxila & Nalanda. (6) Malviyaji’s plea for vocational education speaks of the fact that he wanted people to be materially well – off and to be a self sufficient and self dependent nation.
